President Barack Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize
On October 9, 2009, President Barack Obama made
history once again by receiving the Nobel Peace Prize
for 2009, for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen
international diplomacy and cooperation between people".
President Obama is the third African American to win the
Nobel Peace Prize. The first person of African descent
to win the prize in 1950 was Dr. Ralph Bunche. Martin
Luther King was the 2nd African American to accept the
award in 1964.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee attached special
importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world
without nuclear weapons. They noted that "his
diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are
to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and
attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's
population". The Committee also endorsed Obama's
appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our
share of responsibility for a global response to global
challenges".
Congratulations, President Obama!
